![]() ![]() When I discovered that much of this novel was based on real people and real experiences, I melted. The beauty and love of literature is almost it's own character and really, what book lover can't appreciate a book the glorifies books!įinally, I thought the characters were wonderful. Sang Ly offers her the book if she can keep her family at. The Rent Collector was based on a documentary called River of Victory. On another front, I love the power that literacy played in this novel. But when Sopeap sees a discarded childrens book lying on Sang Lys cardboard bed, her mood changes. For Americans, it would be hell on earth, but for so many Cambodians, it was simply home- with really awful elements and some really redeeming aspects. Wright does a wonderful job of painting a picture without going too far into the "hell on earth" descriptions that some authors would be tempted to. ![]() First of all, the setting is so well done. ![]() So so so glad I did! I love this book on several different levels. However, when playing Kindle-what-do-I-read-next-roulette, I landed on this one. I read the synopsis and thought it wasn't for me. ![]()
